Below are essential documents to guide instructional practice:

  • VDOE Elementary Curriculum Framework provides guidance to school systems and teachers as they develop instructional programs.  It assists K-5th grade teachers in their lesson planning by identifying essential understandings, defining essential content knowledge, and describing the intellectual skills students need to use.  According to the VDOE, it is the content that all teachers should teach and all students should learn.  All schools in the state of Virginia administer annual assessments in English Reading (grades 3, 4, & 5).
  • VDOE Middle School Curriculum Framework provides guidance to school systems and teachers as they develop instructional programs.  It assists 6th-8th grade teachers in their lesson planning by identifying essential understandings, defining essential content knowledge, and describing the intellectual skills students need to use.  According to the VDOE, it is the content that all teachers should teach and all students should learn.  All schools in the state of Virginia administer annual assessments in English Reading (grades 6, 7, & 8) and Writing (grade 8).
  • VDOE High School Curriculum Framework provides guidance to school systems and teachers as they develop instructional programs.  It assists 9th-12th grade teachers in their lesson planning by identifying essential understandings, defining essential content knowledge, and describing the intellectual skills students need to use.  According to the VDOE, it is the content that all teachers should teach and all students should learn.  All schools in the state of Virginia administer end-of-course assessments in Reading (grade 11) and Writing (grade 11).

 

APS Curriculum utilizes evidence-based high quality resources aligned to the science of reading for all students to reach the Virginia Standards of Learning. Scarborough’s Reading Rope highlights that students need both instruction in word recognition and language comprehension to become skilled and fluent readers.

Students in grades K-3 receive explicit and direct instruction in phonics through 95 Phonics Core Program or Fundations.

Students in grades K-5 receive explicit instruction in language comprehension to include vocabulary, background knowledge, and shared learning experiences with our newest resource CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts).
