Dear Friends of APS:
Thank you! On November 8, Arlington voters approved the $165.01 million in school bonds to improve and upgrade existing school infrastructure. The school bonds support projects to maintain and update APS school facilities to meet the changing needs of students and the community.
Congratulations to Bethany Zecher Sutton, who was elected to the Arlington School Board on November 8. She will succeed Dr. Barbara Kanninen beginning January 1, 2023.

Community Engagement Opportunities – March 2022

Dear Friends of APS:
Over the past week, we received questions about how schools are helping students process news about Ukraine. We have staff and students with family or cultural ties to Ukraine and Russia, and many U.S. military-connected families and our focus is on supporting and maintaining safe spaces for all. To help students better understand this event, we provided age-appropriate resources for teachers and parents to use as a guide.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. In addition, National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated across the county each year from Sep. 15 to Oct. 15.

APS is currently reviewing our school division’s relationship and operations with School Resource Officers (SROs), including the review and monitoring of the APS Memorandum of Understanding with Arlington County Police Department (ACPD). School Board accepting Nominations for 2021 Honored Citizens
The Arlington School Board seeks to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions on a voluntary basis to our schools. We invite you to nominate someone who has demonstrated a sustained commitment of at least five years to APS. This year has been especially challenging and many long-time volunteers have gone above and beyond their usual commitment to help our families through the pandemic and deserve to be recognized. This week, nearly 200 Career & Technical Education (CTE) students enrolled in select courses at the Arlington Career Center will return for hybrid/in-person learning. We are glad to have many teachers and staff back in our buildings last week and this week to continue preparations for more students to return. Superintendent Durán’s weekly updates explain how APS is determining and preparing for additional students to return to in-person learning.

This week APS opened instructional learning support to a limited number of students with the highest need.
We continue to monitor health metrics and hope to begin Level 2 return for PreK-5th grade students in January.
We thank Arlington voters for a 79.3% approval rate of $52.65 million in School Bonds. We could not educate Arlington youth without your valuable support.

Community Engagement Opportunities – Nov 2020

Dear Friends of APS:

Lots happening at APS. Based on updated guidance and the latest health metrics, APS is proceeding with Return-to-School Level 1 beginning on November 4, providing in-person learning support to 236 students with disabilities. The Superintendent has made the decision to pause Level 2 return, which was projected to begin on November 12, because we continue to see an increase in the COVID-19 case incidence rate in our area.

APS is hard at work planning for a phased hybrid in-person return to the classroom as soon as it is safe to do so, depending on COVID-19 metrics. At the same time, a Fall Elementary School Boundary Process is underway to fill two new elementary schools opening in Fall 2021 at the Key and Reed sites.
