The 2023 APS Summer School Program will provide in-person strengthening math and language arts support, credit recovery, and Extended School Year services for students meeting specific eligibility criteria.

Additional summer learning opportunities for grade-eligible students include new work for credit courses (9th-12th graders, fee-based) and Boost Courses: Exact Path (6th-12th graders, free).

  • Overview: Students in grades 6-12 can engage in this optional virtual program to support their skills in math, reading and language arts. Students will begin with a diagnostic assessment and a personalized learning path will be developed to target their individual strengths and needs. Students can access Exact Path on their APS device at any time or any place, and work at their own pace. No registration is required. On July 5, students will be able to access the program through MyAccess (Clever). If needed, students will be able to seek support through the APS Summer Virtual Learning Coordinator, Keima Weinberg. The updated 2023 Summer School Program will offer:

  • In-person learning and strengthening for elementary and middle school students with critical learning deficits in literacy, math or both.
  • Opportunity for eligible high school students to recover credits toward fulfilling graduation requirements or to earn original credit in specific courses.
  • Opportunity for all students (grades 6-12) to participate in Virtual Boost Courses through Exact Path for math, reading and language arts.
  • Opportunity for English Learners (rising 9th graders – rising 11th graders) to maintain and strengthen language skills through English Bridge courses.
  • Extended School Year Services for students with disabilities.

Eligibility

Elementary and middle school students’ eligibility for summer school will be communicated during parent-teacher conferences in early March. Students are eligible based on literacy criteria, math criteria or both. High school students’ eligibility for summer school is based on their final grade in courses they need to graduate; therefore, they will begin to be notified of their eligibility in May.

Programs by grade level


Pre-K Strengthening Program

  • Overview: Provides support for current, eligible Pre-K students through small group and individual interventions in literacy and math to build their academic skills.
  • Dates/Location: July 5, 2023 – August 1, 2023, in person at designated cluster school sites
  • Times: 9:15 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.
  • Eligibility:  Pre-K students falling below the benchmark on key indicators for the Pre-K Language and Literacy screener and/or not demonstrating proficiency in math based on the mid-year math quick check.

Elementary Strengthening 

  • Overview: Provides support for current eligible K-5 students who will engage in Project Based Learning STEM lessons and activities to build their academic skills.
  • Dates/Location: July 5, 2023 – August 1, 2023, in person at designated cluster school sites
  • Times: 9:15 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.
  • Eligibility: ​Students who have not been successful in reading, math, or both will be recommended by school staff to enroll in the summer school program. This same criteria applies to English learners and to students with disabilities who are not eligible for Extended School Year services.

Middle School Strengthening 

  • Overview: Provides support for current, eligible students in grades 6-7 who will engage in Project Based Learning STEM lessons and activities to build their academic skills.
  • Dates/Location: July 5, 2023 – August 1, 2023, in person, at one designated site
  • Times: 7:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
  • Eligibility: Students who have not been successful in reading, math, or both grades and will be recommended by their schools to enroll in the summer school program.

NOTE:  8th graders/rising 9th graders will attend the high school summer school site except for Interlude, MIPA, and FLS. Those programs will attend the middle school site.


Credit Recovery for Current 8th Grade Students

  • Eighth graders who fail English or math needed for promotion are eligible to enroll in math or English during summer school at the high school site.
  • 8th graders who need Math and English will take one in-person course and will be required to complete Exact Path (virtual learning) to help boost their math, reading, and language arts skills.

High School Credit Recovery (Grades 9-12)

  • Overview: Provides eligible students the opportunity to recover credits toward fulfilling graduation requirements. The four-week program is 4.5 hours per day, in person at one designated site.
  • Dates/Location: July 5, 2023 – August 1, 2023, in person at Wakefield High School. Time: 7:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
  • Eligibility: Eligibility is based on credit recovery needs. Students who have failed a course required for graduation are eligible.

New Work for Credit (Grades 9-12) (Virtual/Blended, Fee-Based)

  • Overview: Provides students the opportunity to earn original credit in specific courses.
  • Dates: July 5, 2023 – August 1, 2023
  • Fee Based Enrollment: Registration March 1, 2023 through May 1, 2023
  • English 11 for English Learners (in-person and virtual)
  • Economics & Personal Finance (virtual only)
  • Health and PE I & II (in-person and virtual) – Students are required to attend the summer school’s in-person instruction on July 5 – 7 and July 10 -14 from 7:45 am to 12:15 pm at Wakefield High School
  • Cost: $350. Reduced – $87

Introduction to Advanced Courses:

  •  Overview: Is a 4-day (16 hours total) course designed for Washington- Liberty High School students planning to take an AP or IB course for the first time in the upcoming school year.  This course focuses on helping students develop the skills they need to be successful in high level courses. Students will work on strengthening their reading comprehension, analytical writing, self-advocacy, time management, organizational skills and other executive functions needed to successfully complete AP or IB level classes. This 4 -day course is available during one of the summer school weeks – Monday, July 10 – Thursday, July 13 for 4 hours per day.  Limited to WL students only. Please contact your school counselor or the student’s teacher for additional information.

Extended School Year (ESY) (Grades PreK – 12)

  • Overview: Provides eligible students who have an IEP and identified critical life skills, with small group instruction by a Special Education Teacher. Eligibility is discussed and determined at the student’s IEP meeting as students must fit specific criteria to be eligible. The program will take place in person at a designated site.
  • Dates/Location:
    • Elementary – July 5, 2023 – August 1st, 2023, at a designated cluster school site; 9:15 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.
    • Secondary – July 5, 2023 – August 1st, 2023; 7:45 am. – 12:15 pm at the designated cluster site
  • Eligibility: Student eligibility is discussed and determined at the student’s IEP meeting.

Additional Programs – Outdoor Lab

The Outdoor Lab offers three sessions of overnight science enrichment camp that provide a number of nature-related activities and experiences to Arlington Public School students who have completed grades 4 through 8.

A blend of traditional camp activities (hiking, evening campfires, crafts, skits) and nature exploration make this program fun and informative. Staff safely guide campers through various activities that may include aquatic studies, natural history, survival skills, and more.

Online Resource for Students – Paper

  • Arlington Public Schools has partnered with Paper to provide unlimited access to trained tutors so every student in grades 6-12 can ask questions, work through problems, and grow their confidence—at no cost to families.
  • Paper is an online, on-demand academic support service that provides students with unlimited, 24/7 academic support.
  • Whether students are stuck on homework, studying for a test, or need someone to read and make suggestions to their writing, there will always be experts available online to assist students one-on-one in all subject areas and in more than 4 languages.
