About the Instructor

Simon R. Contreras, born in Venezuela, received a BA in Education in 1981 and an MA in Education Administration in 1982 from George Washington University. Señor Contreras teaches Spanish at Washington-Lee High School, is the sponsor of the Cosmopolitan Club Dance Group, and coordinator and lead dancer of the Hispanidades Dance Company. Señor Contreras has been teaching Spanish for Educators since 1993. He also has taught Spanish for Police Officers and Spanish for Travelers.

Simon has received numerous awards including the Golden Poet Award and the Pontari Educational Award in 1989 and was a nominee for Teacher of the Year in 1993. In March 1997, he received a Royal Commendation from the Duchess of Alba for promotion of the Spanish language in the United States.

Simon has served as Secretary of the Council on Minority Concerns and as fund-raiser chairman for the Arlington Chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). The El Tiempo Latino Newspaper, Washington, D.C. named Simón the Latin Personality of the Week for the week of November 14, 1997.
