Summer School Registration Underway

Registration for distance learning secondary summer school is underway. Elementary students who qualify to participate in the Elementary Summer Learning Program will automatically be registered by APS. Details on summer school eligibility is available here.

Secondary Programs:

Registration for Distance Learning Secondary Summer School will be open from June 15-30. APS students in grades 6-7 and 9-11 who received a “D/D+” or an “E” in a core course, and were not able to access Canvas during April, May or June, are eligible to take up to four Make Up and Strengthening Courses.  Students in grades 8 and 12 who received a “D/D+” or an “E”  in one or more core courses  needed for promotion to the 9th grade, or graduation from high school, are  eligible for summer learning regardless of their ability to access Canvas during the closure. Virtual Make Up and Strengthening Courses will be offered free of charge to all APS students who qualify; refunds will be provided to families who registered and paid prior to the closure as soon as APS staff are allowed to access their buildings.

High school students who wish to register for a Virtual New Work for Credit Course will be able to sign up for one of three social studies courses:  Economics and Personal Finance, Virginia and US History or Virginia and US Government. In order to be eligible for New Work, students must meet all applicable prerequisites as stated in the APS Program of Studies:

The fee for the Virtual New Work Courses has increased from $300 to $350 (the fee remains $87 for students who are eligible for Free/Reduced priced meals). Students who previously registered and paid $300 for a Virtual New Work Course need not submit a new form but will need to pay the balance of $50. Checks, money orders or bank drafts for the appropriate amount ($350 or $87 for new registrants, and $50 for students who registered previously) should be sent to:

Arlington Public Schools
Attn: Endia G. Holmes,
Finance Department, 4th Floor
2110 Washington Blvd.
Arlington, VA 22204

Full payment must be received by June 30 or the student will not be registered. Refunds will only be provided for New Work Courses that have been canceled.

Middle and high school English learners with a current English Proficiency Level of 1 or 2, as achieved on the 2020 WIDA ACCESS for ELLs, are eligible for free summer school. The course will provide English language development for English Learners, with a focus on reading, writing, speaking and listening. The model will include both synchronous and asynchronous components.

Secondary students wishing to register for either for a Make Up and Strengthening or New Work for Credit course may do so by Distance Learning Secondary Summer School Registration Form.

Elementary Programs:

Elementary students who qualify to participate in the Elementary Summer Learning Program will automatically be registered by APS. Families of eligible students received a letter with information about the program in early June. They should check with their school administrator for additional details. There is no cost to participate in any of the elementary strengthening courses  and families who registered and paid previously will receive a full refund as soon as APS staff are able to access their buildings. Since all eligible elementary students will be automatically registered, parents who wish to dis-enroll their children should relay that information to an administrator at their child’s school.

For additional information, please contact the Summer School Office at summerschool@apsva.us.
