Dear APS Families:

The final stretch of the school year is upon us. This month, APS celebrates two important cultural recognitions. May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month. We’ve assembled the history and resources of these important cultural recognitions online.

Spring Assessments: I know our schools are working hard to coordinate the end-of-year assessments and Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which are administered to students in grades 3-12 from May 15 through June 9. Additional information can be found online. Your school has also communicated specific dates to staff and families. Please help students do their best by making sure you don’t schedule appointments or days out of school on their test dates, and ensuring they have plenty of sleep and a healthy breakfast before their tests.

Registration Dates for Extended Day: Extended Day registration for the 2023-24 school year is now open for returning families and continues through May 12. The registration process is conducted in four phases. Registration and additional information are available online.

Celebrating our Wonderful Teachers: Next week (May 8-12) is Teacher Appreciation Week. APS teachers go beyond ensuring that APS students receive the best education possible, even during challenging times, and for that I thank you. We encourage families to send a free eGreeting to a teacher or staff member to celebrate this special week. Join in the conversation on social media using #ThankAPSteachers.

Thanking Our Food Services Staff: This Fri, May 5, is School Lunch Hero Day and I want to thank our dedicated and hardworking school nutrition staff for ensuring our students are well-fed and ready to learn every day.

Additional May Recognitions: Also in May, APS recognizes Mental Health Awareness Month and Better Speech and Hearing Month. We also celebrate School Nurses Day (May 10), School Communicators Day (May 12) and National Speech Pathologist Day (May 18).

Thank you for your partnership and support as we near the finish line for this school year!

Sincerely,

Dr. Francisco Durán
