The Arlington School Board has appointed Dustin Barnes as Principal of Tuckahoe Elementary School. Barnes is currently the Academic Principal of Jefferson Houston IB K-8 School in Alexandria.
Barnes has been an educator for over 14 years. He began his career as a social studies teacher at Queen Anne’s County and Alexandria City Public Schools. Over the last eight years, Barnes served the students, parents, and staff in Alexandria City Public Schools as an Academic Principal.
He has a bachelor’s degree in history from Kent State University, a master’s degree in teaching from Bowie State University and Administration Certification from George Washington University.
Barnes has led professional development sessions for staff to improve overall student achievement. He is committed to helping teachers enhance their skills, build relationships with parents, and advocate for an equitable school environment. Barnes strives to maximize students’ success. Working collaboratively with colleagues is one of his top priorities, focusing on optimal learning opportunities for the students and families he serves.
Barnes understands the important role school plays, and he is aligned with the APS Strategic Plan to ensure all students learn and thrive in a safe, supportive, and healthy learning environment.
His appointment begins Sept. 6.
