May is Better Speech and Hearing Month
May is National Better Speech and Hearing Month. The combined professions of audiologists and speech-language pathologists assist in the development of communication skills and minimize auditory deprivation for children and adults with hearing loss. This gives both children and adults the ability to communicate for successful daily living.
One new communication initiative that is being piloted at five elementary schools this year is AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) on the Playground. Communicating within different environments supports learning and generalization of skills. This initiative rethinks how we can support student communication in all environments, and fosters safety and socialization skills on the playground.
The Parent Resource Center joins APS in acknowledging and celebrating the important work of APS’ Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists. We are looking forward to welcoming Mr. Timothy Flynn, Jamestown Elementary’s Speech and Language Pathologist, for a Lunch and Learn focused on stuttering on June 8th. (Details are in our event section below).

Melwood, a local non-profit, is partnering with Marymount University to create innovative Halloween costumes for students who use adaptive equipment, similar to an initiative that took place last year in Hartford County.
