If there is availability for neighborhood transfers, families will be able to apply between Feb. 21, 2022 – March 11, 2022.

All options and transfers applications are available through the online application portal. Additional information on the application timeline and process is available on the options and transfers webpage.

Option High Schools & Programs

  • Arlington Tech at the Career CenterArlington Tech is a rigorous, project-based learning, high school program that prepares students to succeed in college and in the workplace through collaborative problem-solving. Arlington Tech students learn how to effectively apply their interdisciplinary academic knowledge with skills developed in their Career Technical Education (CTE) classes.
  • Advanced Placement (AP) Network at Wakefield High SchoolThe Advanced Placement® (AP) Network, sponsored by the College Board, offers high school students the opportunity to take college-level courses in high school and receive credit, advanced placement, or both when they enter college while receiving additional supports as a part of this specially designed program to overcome the academic challenges these courses present.
  • Dual Language Immersion Program at Wakefield High SchoolThe dual language immersion program at Wakefield is designed to continue and expand on the study of Spanish language and culture begun in elementary and middle school and increase the study of Spanish literature. Students currently enrolled in the Spanish Immersion program at Gunston Middle School will complete an Intent-to-Return form through their school, but do not need to submit an application through the application portal.
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Program at Washington-Liberty High SchoolThe IB program provides a rigorous education for highly motivated and academically proficient Washington-Liberty students in grades 11 and 12. It represents a deliberate compromise between the demand for specialization in the high school curriculum and the emphasis for breadth of knowledge. The IB program is unique in that it provides a cohesive interdisciplinary education leading to a diploma that is recognized at universities throughout the world.
  • H-B Woodlawn Secondary ProgramThe H-B Woodlawn Program is designed to provide its students with more control over their education than traditional comprehensive schools permit. The central focus of H-B Woodlawn’s program is student choice. Students make choices in three general areas: use of time and personal behavior, educational goals, and school governance.

H-B Woodlawn Slot Allocation
A total of 26 ninth-grade slots at H-B Woodlawn are available for the 2022-23 school year. These slots are in addition to the students already in the program who will be rising ninth-grade students next school year. Under the APS options and transfers procedures, slots in the ninth-grade class at H-B Woodlawn will be assigned based on the size of eighth-grade cohorts in each middle school, and based on the number of students who were not previously enrolled in APS who applied to the program.

When applying to H-B Woodlawn, families must apply based on the middle school their child currently attends. If their child is not currently enrolled in APS, they must apply under the “outside of APS” allotment. As offers for slots at H-B Woodlawn are accepted and/or declined, offers are made to the next student on the ninth-grade waitlist under the same middle school allotment. All families interested in attending H-B Woodlawn for the 2022-23 school year will need to submit an application because the waitlist from the previous school year will not carry over for the new 2022-23 application period.

The H-B Woodlawn slot allocation for each middle school is as follows:

School Name Slots
Dorothy Hamm 4
Gunston 5
Jefferson 4
Kenmore 4
Swanson 4
Williamsburg 4
Outside of APS 1

Neighborhood Transfers
Neighborhood transfers to all APS high schools will be offered to the extent possible given financial constraints and capacity limits. The availability of high school neighborhood transfers will be announced to families on February, 2022. If there is availability for neighborhood transfers, families will be able to apply for a neighborhood transfer to another neighborhood high school between Feb. 21, 2022 – March 11, 2022. Parents/guardians are responsible for transportation when a student accepts a transfer to another neighborhood school that is accepting transfers. If families are interested in requesting a neighborhood transfer upon availability, they must complete a middle school transfer application through the online application portal.
