APS Students Earn Perfect Scores on National Latin Exam

Seven APS students earned perfect scores on this year’s exams National Latin Exam. The seven perfect papers were among more than 586 Arlington Latin students who took the exam in March.

Of the 586 students who took the exam, 217 students earned awards: 66 students earned gold medals (Summa Cum Laude), 55 students received a silver medal (Maxima Cum Laude), 44 earned a Magna Cum Laude certificate and 52 earned the Cum Laude certificate.

Perfect Scores

  • Swanson Middle School students Jake Lawrence, Oliver Meek, Luke Mucchetti, Natalie Nardone, and Mickey Robertson all earned a perfect score on the 2018 Level I National Latin Exam.
  • Amelia Puchalla, also of Swanson, achieved a perfect score on the Level II Exam.
  • Graham Lazorchak of Washington-Lee High School earned a perfect on the Level IV Exam.

At every level, only around 0.5 percent of students achieve a perfect paper in these exams, while gold summa cum laude medals are awarded to the top 10 percent of participants at each level.

The National Latin Exam was established in 1977 to provide students with a national standard to measure their academic success. The exam covers grammar, reading comprehension, Roman culture, history, geography, mythology, and etymology. 131,787 students from the United States and 24 countries took the exam in 2018.This year’s APS awardees, listed by school, are:

Arlington Public Schools to Participate Summer Meals Program

Arlington Public Schools is participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to students ages 18 and under on a first come, first serve basis, from July 5-Aug. 1 at Carlin Springs Elementary School (5995 5th Road S.).
