April Calendar for School Board Meetings and Work Sessions

The Arlington School Board’s April schedule of Board Meetings, Work Sessions, and Advisory Council and Committee Meetings is now available. This schedule is subject to change with advance notice provided on the APS website. Contact the School Board Office for more information at 703-228-6015.

April School Board Meetings
School Board meetings start at 6:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted.  School Board meetings can be viewed live online or on Comcast Channel 70 or Verizon Channel 41.  Agendas and additional information are available in BoardDocs.

The School Board provides opportunity for public comment on non-agenda and agenda items at regularly-scheduled Board meetings.  You can sign up to speak at meetings in advance on the APS website or at the School Board meeting. Please review the School Board adopted School Board Guidelines for Public Comment to help prepare to speak at a School Board meeting.

  • Citizens have up to two (2) minutes to speak.
  • Citizen comment on non-agenda items will not be announced prior to 7 p.m.
  • The time allowed per speaker may be reduced by the Chair if circumstances warrant (such as an unusually large number of citizens speaking on a particular topic).
  • Speakers may not speak more than once on a specific topic.

School Board Advisory Councils and Committees
The School Board seeks the advice of community members through a wide range of advisory committees and councils. These advisory committees and councils are appointed by the School Board, advise the School Board and, when appropriate, make recommendations on issues or policies related to the successful operation of the school system. For more information on how to apply for a committee, visit the APS Website.

The schedule of public meetings for these committees and councils is listed below.  Dates are subject to change.

Advisory Committee on Transportation Choices
The Advisory Committee on Transportation Choices is a joint advisory body of the County Board of Arlington County and the Arlington School Board for the purpose of advising the Joint Committee on Transportation Choices (JCTC). The JCTC develops and implements programs that further transportation choice for APS students, families, and staff.

Advisory Council on Instruction
The Advisory Council on Instruction (ACI) is made up of representatives from each school and certain community organizations and assists in reviewing the system-wide curriculum and instructional program and in developing recommendations for improvement.

Advisory Council on School Facilities and Capital Programs
The Advisory Council on School Facilities and Capital Programs assists the School Board in the continuous, systematic review of school facilities and with the long-range Capital Improvement Program.

Budget Advisory Council
The Budget Advisory Council makes recommendations on policies and practices related to the presentation and preparation of the operating budget and the financial management of the school system, and makes recommendations to the School Board on budget priorities.

Career Center Working Group
The Arlington Public Schools Board and the Arlington County Board created a joint working group that will recommend how the Career Center site may be developed in phases to accommodate more high school capacity and new community amenities.

Joint Facilities Advisory Commission
The mission of the Joint Facilities Advisory Commission is to provide input to the Boards on capital facilities needs assessment, capital improvement plans and long range facility planning for both the Arlington County Government and Arlington Public Schools.

New Elementary School at the Reed Site Building Level Planning Committee (BLPC)
The BLPC will assist the School Board to achieve Goal 4 of the APS 2011‐17 Strategic Plan to Provide Optimal Learning Environments that are adaptable to future changes of use, energy efficient, environmentally sustainable, and provide adequate outdoor space for physical education, recess and community use.

School Health Advisory Board
The School Health Advisory Board is mandated by the Virginia General Assembly and is organized to advise school divisions about the development and implementation of school health programs, including health instruction, the school environment and health services.

Arlington Public Schools to Participate Summer Meals Program

Arlington Public Schools is participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to students ages 18 and under on a first come, first serve basis, from July 5-Aug. 1 at Carlin Springs Elementary School (5995 5th Road S.).

School Board Appoints Principal of Arlington Science Focus Elementary School

At its June 22 meeting, the Arlington School Board appointed Gina Miller as Principal of Arlington Science Focus Elementary School. 

School Board Appoints Principal of Claremont Immersion Elementary School

At its June 22 meeting, the Arlington School Board appointed Dr. Liza Burrell-Aldana as Principal of Claremont Immersion Elementary School.
