1. APS Celebrates Employees’ Years of Service
At the school board meeting on Thursday, employees with 30, 35 and 50 years of service were recognized and thanked for their dedication to APS. Yorktown teacher and football coach Bruce Hanson was honored for his 50 years of service to APS. Coach Hanson mentored and inspired generations of students, achieving nearly 300 wins so in his coaching career, so far.View the entire list of employees’ years of service online.
2. VIDEO: Every Student Counts – Tuckahoe Students Engage in Engineering & Sustainability Project
In this Every Student Counts video, go inside Tuckahoe Elementary to see Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) in action as students build arcade games out of cardboard. This embeds hands-on lessons and content areas into one and is just one of the creative ways schools immerse every APS student in science.
3. Innovation Hosts STEM Night
This week, Innovation welcomed all families to its 2nd annual Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Night. Local restaurant Troy’s Kitchen and the Kona Ice Truck offered dinner and treats. Third graders provided baked goods to raise money for their community giving project. Students and their families participated in engineering activities, science and math challenges, and various robotics activities. Station 4 of the Arlington County Fire Department helped by using their ladder truck to test out engineering inventions.
4. What APS is Celebrating in May
May is another busy month to recognize the cultural contributions many students, staff and families make to APS. We also recognize several employee groups for their hard work and dedication to APS. Throughout the month of May, APS will celebrate:

5. APS Students Create Public Service Announcements on Opioid Crisis
APS students worked with school-based staff and Arlington Education Television (AETV) to produce their own messages on the opioid crisis affecting the country. APS will share these peer-to-peer student video series on social media and through the substance abuse coordinators. View the first video message, produced by Williamsburg students.
