Good afternoon from your Parent Resource Center (PRC). It was lovely to see many parents this Saturday at SEPTA’s Summer Activities Fair on Saturday. Kudos to Arlington SEPTA for this successful event, and for being such a wonderful and constant resource for our disability community. To join and/or learn more about Arlington SEPTA, please visit: www.arlingtonsepta.org. SEPTA offers monthly meetings, a list-serv, mini-grants for staff, and a variety of other events and supports for Arlington students, families and staff.
Following a week that has been a difficult one for our school community, our thoughts have been with families, students and our colleagues – particularly the Wakefield community. We are grateful that SEPTA’s February meeting is focused on Self-Care. As we strive to support children, we know it’s important for adults to also engage in self-care. Please try and join SEPTA this Thursday, February 9 from 7:30pm to 9pm – in person, if possible, or virtually for Cultivating Self-Care. As always, SEPTA welcomes families and staff members to their meetings. (Although new members are always welcomed, you do not have to be a member to participate in SEPTA’s monthly meetings.) Additional details are below, and you can register using this link for Cultivating Self-Care.
A few months ago, a small team in partnership with Arlington SEPTA began planning for a parent/guardian session on addressing the unique needs/risks of students with disabilities in regard to substance use. We will be offering the session in English on February 16th, and in Spanish on February 23rd. Register here to participate in Substance Use Prevention for Neurodiverse Kids.
Finally, as a reminder, tomorrow the Parent Resource Center is partnering with the Developmental Disabilities (DD) Committee of the Arlington Community Services Board and The Arc of Northern Virginia to co-host a virtual listen and learn session for families of students with developmental disabilities – Medicaid Waivers: Supports for Children and Adults with Developmental Disabilities – from 4pm to 6pm. Register at this link for the session.
PRC Library Collection
During the past several months, our wonderful Library Services team has been working to help expand our library collection and to ease access to our materials. Many thanks to Library Services Supervisor Amy Hailey for her ongoing encouragement and support, and to Library Technician Valaria Soroko for her support, including creating a couple of short informational videos on how to both explore materials in our library and check out materials from the library. With great support from Library Services, we now have many digital materials in English and Spanish, including e-books and audiobooks, along with our print collection. Borrowing materials is free and very simple. Just email prc@apsva.us with your name and phone number, and we will create an account for you.Once you have an account, you can borrow print and digital materials. Please contact us at prc@apsva.us or 703.228.7239 to learn more.
