Good evening. We hope everyone is keeping warm during these brisk days! Winter is certainly here, and we are very enthusiastic about our upcoming January and February offerings. This week, the Arlington Special Education Advisory Committee (ASEAC) will hold its monthly meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, January 25th. On Thursday, Ms. Chiquita Seaborne with the Virginia Department of Education, will join us for the PRC’s first ever Lunch and Learn – short sessions scheduling mid-day in the hopes that you can take a break and join us over lunch for helpful information to support your child’s learning and development. Thursday evening we will launch our five-week Spanish language Telenovela Parent Sessions. Next week, Gina and Kathleen will present a virtual session on Your Child’s Individualized Education Program, and we are looking forward to learning more about housing and building community when we host a session presented by Our Stomping Ground on February 16th. Details about these events can be found on our Events page. Have a healthy and wonderful week.
Several years ago, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) launched the Critical Decision Points for Families of Children with Disabilities guide, which was developed in order to assist families of children with disabilities with understanding keys to their children’s academic success, as well as decisions that they will have to make throughout their children’s careers in public education. Information is provided that will assist parents with understanding not only what decisions will need to be made, but also when those decisions need to start being considered. VDOE has now created a Critical Decision Points One-Pager Library, which offers one page documents for families including one pagers on the difference between IEPs and 504 Plans; handling disagreements about your child’s special education program; your Parental Rights and more.
Five web-based training modules are also available and can be found at I’m Determined – Critical Decision Points for Families of Children with Disabilities.
