Virginia Recognizes 14 Arlington Schools for Excellence in Education

Governor Ralph Northam and the State Board of Education announced that 14 Arlington schools have earned 2018 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) awards based upon student achievement and other performance indicators during the 2016-17 school year.

The awards were created by the Board of Education to recognize schools and divisions that exceed state and federal accountability standards and achieve excellence goals established by the governor and the board.

  • Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence

To earn the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence, schools and school divisions must meet all state and federal achievement benchmarks and achieve all applicable excellence goals for elementary reading, enrollment in Algebra I by the eighth grade, enrollment in college-level courses, high school graduation, attainment of advanced diplomas, increased attainment of career and industry certifications, and participation in the Virginia Preschool Initiative. APS schools that are recognized include:

  • Arlington Traditional School
  • Jamestown Elementary School
  • Swanson Middle School

2018 Board of Education Excellence Award Recipients
Schools earning the second-highest honor also met all state and federal accountability benchmarks and made significant progress toward goals for increased student achievement and expanded educational opportunities set by the board. APS schools that are recognized include:

  • Arlington Science Focus School
  • Ashlawn Elementary School
  • Discovery Elementary School
  • McKinley Elementary School
  • Nottingham Elementary School
  • Taylor Elementary School
  • Tuckahoe Elementary School
  • Williamsburg Middle School

2018 Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award Recipients
The Board recognized 15 school divisions and 202 schools, which included three schools within APS. These schools met all state and federal benchmarks and made progress toward the goals set by the board. APS schools that are recognized include:

  • Long Branch Elementary School
  • Washington-Lee High School
  • Yorktown High School

Arlington Public Schools to Participate Summer Meals Program

Arlington Public Schools is participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to students ages 18 and under on a first come, first serve basis, from July 5-Aug. 1 at Carlin Springs Elementary School (5995 5th Road S.).

At its June 22 meeting, the Arlington School Board appointed Dr. Liza Burrell-Aldana as Principal of Claremont Immersion Elementary School.
