Dear APS Families,

Here are a few updates for the week ahead:

School Bell Study Recommendation – Thank you to everyone who provided input on the school bell schedules. Based on the feedback received, we developed an alternative scenario to present to the Board which minimizes start time changes as much as possible, while still achieving the goals of the project. The recommendations will be presented to the School Board this Thursday, for action on May 12. View the presentation online.

Summer School Extended Day Registration Continues – Families with children enrolled in Summer School are encouraged to register for Extended Day. The online registration continues through June 30 and there are no waitlists. However, sites may be consolidated if minimum enrollment is not reached, and students would be transported to another summer site. Only students enrolled in APS Elementary Summer School are eligible to participate and you must register for the school where your child is attending summer school. Additional information regarding Extended Day registration for the summer and upcoming school year (school year registration begins May 24) is available online.

Secondary Families: Know Your Rights Student Course – On Tue, May 3, secondary students and staff will be enrolled in a “Know Your Rights” Canvas Course. Since 2018, APS has provided this course and accompanying student guide, “Know Your Rights: Your Guide to Interacting with Law Enforcement,” to ensure middle and high school students know their 4th and 5th Amendment rights and have the resources they need to become informed, civic-minded members of society. The materials were updated this year to reflect changes to how APS works with law enforcement.  We hope that this resource will encourage families to engage in conversations about expectations for their student(s) when interacting with law enforcement. Additional resources and information are available online.

Celebrating APS Admin Professionals and Extended Day Staff – Happy National Administrative Professionals Appreciation Day! Please remember to recognize the office staff and the administrative specialists who support your teams and help move APS forward. Please also join APS in thanking our phenomenal Extended Day staff, as part of National Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week. Our over 400 Extended Day staff work across APS to provide a safe, enriching and fun environment before and after school each day for over 4,000 children.

Coming Next Week: Teacher Appreciation – We look forward to the chance to thank our wonderful teachers next week for Teacher Appreciation Week! Please join us next week in thanking them for all they do.

Reminder – Monday is a holiday (no school) as we will celebrate Eid. Enjoy the long weekend!

Sincerely,

Dr. Francisco Durán
