Updated Oct. 4: Governor Terry McAuliffe and the State Board of Education announced that 16 Arlington schools have earned 2017 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) awards based upon student achievement and other performance indicators during the 2015-16 school year. The awards were created by the Board of Education in 2008 and recognize schools and divisions that exceed minimum state and federal accountability standards and achieve excellence goals established by the governor and the board.
Superintendent Dr. Pat Murphy said, “We are very proud of all of our schools and we recognize and appreciate the efforts of all of our instructional leaders, teachers, families, and especially our students, for their exceptional accomplishments. Congratulations to the schools that have been recognized this year by the Governor and the Virginia Board of Education.”
2017 Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence
Nine schools earned top honors, which included six schools within APS. To earn the Governor’s Award, schools must meet all state and federal achievement benchmarks and achieve all applicable criteria for excellence goals. APS schools that are recognized include:
- Arlington Traditional School
- Jamestown Elementary School
- McKinley Elementary School
- Nottingham Elementary School
- Taylor Elementary School
- Williamsburg Middle School
2017 Board of Education Excellence Award Recipients
Two school divisions and 145 schools earned Board of Education, which included three schools within APS. These schools also met all state and federal accountability benchmarks and made significant progress toward goals for increased student achievement and expanded educational opportunities set by the board. APS schools that are recognized include:
- Arlington Science Focus School
- Ashlawn Elementary School
- Discovery Elementary School
- Glebe Elementary School (Glebe was awarded the 2017 Board of Education Excellence Award on Oct. 4 when the Virginia Board of Education recognized additional schools)
2017 Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award Recipients
The Board recognized 15 school divisions and 231 schools, which included six schools within APS. These schools met all state and federal benchmarks and made progress toward the goals set by the board. APS schools that are recognized include:
- Hoffman-Boston Elementary School
- Swanson Middle School
- Tuckahoe Elementary School
- Washington-Lee High School
- Yorktown High School
