APS News Release

Summer School Registration Opens March 5

summerschoolRegistration for Summer School begins on Thursday, March 5. Arlington Public Schools provides a variety of summer programs for students in Pre-K through Grade 12. Most classes begin on July 6.  Elementary programs are only open to current APS students. Most but not all secondary programs are open to both APS and non-APS students.

APS students should register at their neighborhood schools by 4 p.m. on the day of the relevant deadline. Please see the Summer School catalog for information on reduced fees, and your school principal for need-based scholarships. Only APS elementary students who are identified as eligible to receive remediation services may register for the elementary strengthening program.  Apart from Outdoor Lab, APS will not offer elementary enrichment programs in summer 2020.

Non-APS Arlington resident secondary students should register at their neighborhood APS school. In order to be eligible for transportation, APS elementary students who attend countywide programs during the school year, or who are transfers during the school year, will attend their neighborhood school for strengthening in the summer. These students must register for summer school at their neighborhood schools. See the Summer School catalog for details regarding transportation and program information.

Summer Camp and Enrichment Update
Registration for all Dept. of Parks and Rec (DPR) camps is still open for families looking for summer activities. Participants can still enroll and be placed on waitlists. Parents or guardians that would like to register for camp can register online in person (3700 S. Four Mile Run Dr.) or by phone (703-228-4747). APS students not currently registered in a DPR camp program are encouraged to register in an available space or be placed on a camp waitlist. The DPR Administrative Services team is currently working to place waitlisted registrants in camps. Check out these summer camp options. All camps provide fee reductions and modifications for those who qualify, and support is available for who need help registering.

Additional Information
Program fees are due at the time of registration and are non-refundable except under very limited circumstances. Transportation for secondary programs will only be offered before first and after second period; secondary students who register for one period only will not be allowed to stay at school when they do not have a class, and will need to arrange alternative mid-day transportation. Information on Arlington County transit options is available at www.arlingtontransit.com.

A teacher signature is required on all registration forms for students enrolling in strengthening programs at all levels. At the secondary level, a counselor signature is also required on all new work for credit registrations. Eighth grade English, Math and Physical Science are only open to students who fail these courses during the year (if students are unsure about whether they will pass, they should wait to register at secondary late registration on June 22).

Reduced fees are available for Arlington families who qualify for free or reduced lunch. Scholarships are also available for those in financial need through their child’s school principal.
