Home Grown Reading Institute

This page provides information for participants in the July 22 – 25, 2019 Teachers College Reading & Writing Project Home Grown Reading Institute for Arlington Title I Schools. We look forward to learning with you this summer!

Who

Participation by invitation of the principal based on 2019-2020 School Year assignment at time of invitation.*

This Institute is designed for participants who have not attended a Reading Institute with the Reading & Writing Project previously (either Home Grown or at Teachers College). Sections are kept small to support dialogue and personalized attention.

What

This Teachers College Readers’ Workshop Institute will engage participants in learning about: building a reading culture; foundational reading skills; toolkits to support strategic reading; writing about reading; flexible, responsive small group work; using read-alouds to support higher comprehension, and partnerships and book clubs.

Topics include: units of study in the reading workshop; classroom library development; fluency and comprehension strategy instruction; phonics as an integral component of early literacy; classroom structures that support inquiry and collaboration; formative assessments and learning progressions to develop data-informed instruction; toolkits, charts, and rubrics; reading, research, and cross-textual work in non-fiction; and methods of supporting and holding students accountable for doing their best work.

Campbell Elementary School

From Carlin Springs Road, proceed straight back into the parking lot. Sidewalk leads from parking lot to main building entrance. Doors remain secured: press call button for entry. We will meet as a large group in the library, which is immediately inside the front door, with entrances to both right and left. We’ll start our day here and break into smaller sections throughout the day.

Get ready to work hard and have fun! Treat yourself to some incredible summer learning to grow your skills in the teaching of reading!

Help our young learners develop into lovers of reading and lifelong learners with the proficiency to succeed in academics and in life!

Leave the Institute with deeper familiarity with the reading workshop model, the Units of Study in the Teaching of Reading materials, and the major goals of each unit; ready to set up your classroom libraries and routines; with research-based, best-practice strategies to implement from the start of the year; prepared to differentiate instruction for diverse learner needs and to engage readers meaningfully in discussion around text.

How

Speak with your principal about participating.

Participants: Sign in and sign out every day! We will use the sign in/out sheets to:

register you in ERO.

submit your time for paid participation per the APS Pay Plan (currently $17.40/hour, which will appear as supplemental pay in your September 15 paycheck).

submit your name and hours to TC, who will issue you a certificate of completion and credit you for for participating in a First Year Institute (which will make advanced Institute opportunities available to you starting next year).

Bring:

Your Units of Study for Teaching Reading kit (including mentor texts/trade books).
If you do not have this, contact your principal about making arrangements to use one during the Institute.
You can leave your kit in the room overnight throughout the Institute. (Please ensure your kit is labeled.)

Personal note-taking needs.
You are likely to want to take notes during the Institute. Please bring whatever supplies you need to do so.
Handouts will be provided in hard copy to enable participation. Digital handouts are available with an APS login.

Lunch/Refreshments
There will be a one-hour break each day for lunch.There is a refrigerator in the staff workroom that is available for use during the institute.Food delivery services are also readily available to Campbell’s address.

*Please note that if your 2019-2020 School Year Assignment changes after the time of invitation to participate in the Institute, your eligibility for institute participation may be affected. Please confirm institute participation with your principal if this situation applies to you.
