Psychological Services

Psychological services are available in all schools to promote the mental health and educational interests of students. Psychologists are assigned to schools on a regular basis. They serve students in both special education and general education programs. School psychologists serve as members of the multidisciplinary team which develops intervention plans for students who are experiencing learning, adjustment or emotional problems. They consult with parents, teachers, and other school staff about the academic, intellectual, social and emotional development of students. Psychologists may conduct individual psychological evaluations to further the understanding of students. They also provide individual or group counseling services, in-services for staff, and parent training opportunities. Parental permission is required for students to participate in testing or counseling with the school psychologist. Psychologists direct parents and students to appropriate community mental health resources, when such services are needed, and serve as a link between the school and community service providers to facilitate services for students.

In addition to serving individual schools, psychologists serve a number of other functions on a system-wide basis, including: providing psychological assessment for the preschool assessment team; serving on the Hispanic Assessment Team; coordinating Home Instruction activities; providing assessments for students who attend private schools, when a disability is suspected; conducting triennial psychological assessments for students who are placed on a contractual basis outside of the public school system; participating on the Student Support Team; and providing psychological services to students attending Arlington’s Alternative Education Program.

Inquiries about psychological services may be directed to the school psychologist in the local school or to
