Safety Audit Committee

Arlington Public Schools pursuant to Code of Virginia § 22.1-279.8 has an established Safety Audit Committee appointed by the Superintendent.  The committee is charged with reviewing assessments of the conditions in each public school in the division and to identify and, if necessary, develop solutions for physical security concerns, including building security issues and identify and evaluate any patterns of student safety concerns occuring on school property or at school-sponsored events.  Recommendations may include structural adjustments, changes in school policy or procedures, and revisions of the standards of conduct for employees and/or students.  The Safety Audit Committee is comprised of membership from across Arlington County including members of the general public.  Membership consists of:

  • Emergency Manager – Arlington Public Schools  (Committee Chair)
  • Risk Manager – Arlington Public Schools
  • Security Coordinator – Arlington Public Schools
  • Safety Coordinator – Arlington Public Schools
  • One Principal – Arlington Public Schools
  • One Assistant Principal – Arlington Public Schools
  • One Teacher – Arlington Public Schools
  • One Student Services Representative – Arlington Public Schools
  • A Representative from Arlington County Department of Public Safety Communications and Emergency Management
  • A Representative from Arlington County Human Services
  • A Representative from Arlington County Police
  • A Representative from Arlington County Fire & Rescue
  • Two Parents of Enrolled Students

The audit committee meets at least quarterly or as necessary and is chaired by the Emergency Manager for Arlington Public Schools.  Findings of school safety audits, safety, security, risk and emergency management plans may be exempt from the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (§ 2.2-3705.2).
