Dear APS Families,

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving. I want to again express how grateful all of us are for our APS families as we work together to help students succeed. I want to share a few updates and highlight the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) students received in the first quarter.

  • Social Emotional Learning (SEL) remains a priority as we see many students experiencing social and emotional challenges this school year, due to the pandemic. APS students are receiving support and learning healthy coping strategies and relationship skills through focused SEL lessons, small group work and individual support. Read this SEL update highlighting the depression awareness and suicide prevention training delivered to 8th and 10th grade students, along with other parent resources.
  • APS is accepting nominations for Teacher and Principal of the Year through Dec. 8: Help us spread the word to your friends and neighbors to nominate a teacher or principal who meets the criteria for this award (details online). This is a chance to help highlight some of the heroes who make a huge difference in the lives of students in Arlington.
  • Next Wed, Dec. 8 is an Early Release Day for students and staff. Check the 2021-22 calendar for other important dates like Winter Break (Dec. 20-Jan.2) and subscribe to your school’s online calendar (from the homepage of the school website) to get updates. The proposed calendar for the 2022-23 school year will be presented at this Thursday’s School Board meeting as an Information Item.

While this is a short month, it is also a busy holiday season that can cause added stress and anxiety for students. APS offers resources to help families concerned about depression and other issues. The Cigna School Support Line is available to provide free, confidential mental health support for our students and families 24/7 at 833-MeCigna (833-632-4462). Thank you and have a great week.

Sincerely,

Dr. Francisco Durán
