Schematic Design for Education Center Reuse Approved

The School Board approved the schematic design for the Education Center reuse at last night’s meeting. The Education Center building at 1426 N. Quincy St. will be renovated to create 500 to 600 additional high school seats, to be completed by the start of the 2021-22 school year.

The project was part of the School Board’s adopted FY 2019-28 Capital Improvement Plan at a cost of $36.05 million which was approved by Arlington County voters this past November. The maximum total cost of the project is $37 million.  The full motion approved by the Board as well as the presentation is available online.

ADDITIONAL ACTION ITEM:
Extended Day Licensing – The Board also approved a staff recommendation that APS Extended Day opt out of Department of Social Services licensing. More information about the rational and background is available on BoardDocs.   

MONITORING ITEM:
PreKindergarten to Grade 12 Student Supports – Staff provided the Board with an update on supports in place for students at all grade levels. The report highlighted Strategic Plan goals of student success; student well-being and an engaged workforce. Read the full presentation online.

RECOGNITIONS:
The Wakefield High School Chorus opened the School Board meeting with their rendition of the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” in honor of Black History Month. The School Board also received a presentation on the Carlin Springs Academic Parent-Teacher Team Approach and viewed a video about the positive impact Teamwork Nights have on the Carlin Springs community. School Board Clerks Melanie Elliott and Claudia Mercado were recognized for School Board Appreciation Week, and in recognition of School Board Appreciation Month, the CCPTA thanked the School Board for their work and dedication to helping the students of Arlington.

The School Board will hold its next Regular Meeting (2110 Washington Blvd.) on Thu, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. The agenda will be posted one week before the meeting on BoardDocs.
