Chief Academic Officer

The Chief Academic Officer administers, directs, coordinates the instructional support program in all subject areas at all levels encompassed by the school division, recommending those policies and practices which are designed to enhance the educational opportunities offered to children, youth, and adults in the Arlington Public Schools. The work involves ensuring that programs and opportunities are of the highest quality commensurate with the resources provided; developing and directing implementation of long-range and short-term plans, goals and objectives, and monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of operations. The incumbent participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Arlington Public Schools initiative and other system-wide policy as a member of the Superintendent’s cabinet. The work requires an understanding of the overall mission, goals, and objectives of the school system.The Chief Academic Officer works under general direction of the Superintendent of Schools. Work is reviewed primarily for compatibility with school system goals and objectives, Board of Education policies and goals, and state Department of Education guidelines. Supervision is exercised, directly, over five directors, (Career and Technical Education, English Learner Services, Curriculum and Instruction, Elementary Special Education, Secondary Special Education) and curricular program supervisors, and through subordinates, over a large staff of professional, technical, administrative support and clerical staff.

Assistant Superintendent, Human Resources

The Assistant Superintendent, Human Resources is responsible for providing collaborative, proactive and responsive leadership in the human resources field to all levels of the school system in order to further the effective and efficient delivery of quality services to APS employees, parents, students, and to Arlington residents. Human Resources is responsible for administration of all aspects of personnel and payroll programs for APS including recruitment and selection of diverse staff; employee relations and assistance; employee communications; substitutes; maintaining the Oracle database; development of the APS school calendars; classification and reclassification of positions; employee benefits programs; licensure of teachers and administrators; scholarships; evaluation of staff; retirement programs; employee recognition programs; grievances; discipline; terminations; policy development, review, updates and changes; and data in response to staffing and strategic plan goals.The Assistant Superintendent, Human Resources serves in an executive level position that performs duties under the general direction of the Chief Operating Officer. Work is reviewed primarily for compatibility with school system goals and objectives, School Board policies and goals, and federal and state guidelines. The Assistant Superintendent, Human Resources works independently while keeping the Chief Operating Officer and colleagues informed of sensitive and controversial issues that might arise.
