Historical Markers Visits “Little Saigon”

In this week’s episode of Historical Markers, Superintendent Dr. Pat Murphy and author Kim O’Connell (Echoes of Little Saigon)  highlight a part of Clarendon that used to be known as Little Saigon.

In the mid-1970s, large numbers of immigrants from Vietnam moved into Arlington. While these Vietnamese people were learning new American culture, they thought it was important to preserve their own culture too. Business space was inexpensive in Clarendon so businesses run by Vietnamese merchants were established here. This area was called Little Saigon for the city of Saigon in Vietnam. Little Saigon became a home away from home for newly arrived immigrants.

Watch this short video about Little Saigon and use #APSHistoricalMarkers to respond to and ask questions about their history. The Historical M https://vimeo.com/226332931/823d308955arkers video series, produced by APS, highlights just a few of the more than 80 historical markers highlighting important sites in Arlington’s past to engage students in learning about local history.
