Historical Markers Showcases Jackson City

In this week’s episode of Historical Markers, Commonwealth’s Attorney Theo Stamos discusses the area formerly known as Jackson City.

It might be hard to imagine that the Crystal City area was once known as Jackson City, the “Monte Carlo of America.” Named for President Andrew Jackson, it was originally planned as a seaport but that never happened. Instead, gambling houses, vice dens and a race track could all be found here. Eventually the Good Citizen League of Arlington with the help of District Attorney Crandall Mackey cleaned up the area and it began to transform into what it is today.

Watch this short video about Jackson City and use #APSHistoricalMarkers to respond to and ask questions about their history. The Historical Markers video series, produced by APS, highlights just a few of the more than 80 historical markers highlighting important sites in Arlington’s past to engage students in learning about local history.
