Eligibility
APS summer strengthening programs are only open to current APS students in grades Pre-K through grade 12 who have been identified as eligible by a school administrator or counselor. Families of eligible elementary students will be notified through ParentVUE and/or an email or phone call from their school on or about April 16. Secondary students will begin to be notified of eligibility by their counselors in late April or early May. The last notification of eligibility for secondary students will be May 28. Secondary students may take a maximum of two strengthening classes as recommended by their counselors.

Neither strengthening students do not need to register but they do need to confirm the following with their school as soon as possible after they are notified of their eligibility:

  • Whether they would like to attend the fully in-person or fully virtual option, or
  • Whether they would like to opt out.

If the school is not notified of a program preference (or that the student intends to opt out) the school will automatically enroll eligible elementary students for the full in-person program by April 30. If secondary students do not provide a program preference or opt out by May 28, they will be enrolled for the full in-person program.

Updated April 20: Summer School Fees
Last week, we incorrectly informed families that students taking summer school strengthening courses would be required to pay a fee for those courses. APS will not charge fees for summer strengthening courses offered as part of the 2021 summer school program. The decision to discontinue fees for summer strengthening programs was made in 2019. APS did not charge fees for participation in strengthening courses offered in our 2020 summer school program as costs for these courses were addressed by CARES Act funding.Moving forward, APS students who are eligible to participate in one or more strengthening courses this summer, will be able to attend for free. APS high school students who are currently eligible for Free or Reduced Price Meals who would like to take Economics and Personal Finance for new work credit will also be able to attend for free as the $87 reduced fee will be paid by the Department of Teaching and Learning. APS students who do not qualify for the reduced new work fee, will be able to participate for the full fee of $350. Online registration for new work for credit will open on May 3. Parents will be invoiced through MySchoolBucks.

Extended Day
Extended Day will not be offered during summer school due to staffing and space constraints and health and safety requirements.

Food Service
It is anticipated that food will be provided at some summer school sites. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.

Transportation
Transportation will be provided to students who live in the bus eligibility zone for the summer school site. Families may review eligibility zones online. Expanded walk zones for some elementary schools will still be in effect and bus service will not be provided to a school site from expanded walk zones. Families can review the expanded walk zones on the APS website. Transportation will only be provided at the beginning and the end of the day. Secondary students who only take one course will need to provide their own transportation in one direction. Bus route information, if applicable, will be provided along with student schedules and other information via ParentVUE on July 2.

Registration for Secondary New Work for Credit Courses
Online registration for virtual New Work Economics and Personal Finance will take place from May 3-14. Cost for the course is $350 full and $87 reduced. Parents will be invoiced through MySchoolBucks. Program Dates are July 6 – August 6. Students who wish to take other virtual new work courses may apply through Virtual Virginia.
