Extended Day and Northern Virginia Community College Cohort
Early Childhood Development Certificate Cohort
Extended Day is collaborating with Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) for Extended Day employees to earn an Early Childhood Development Certificate from NVCC. The Early Childhood Certificate is a 31 credit certificate that qualifies employees for Extended Day supervisory positions.
Key Information about participating in the partnership:
- Scholarships – all or most of the tuition costs can be covered by two scholarship programs, depending on how quickly you move through the program, and which sources of aid you are accessing. The Virginia Child Care Provider Scholarship (through VDSS): https://www.dss.virginia.gov/family/cc/professionals_resources.cgi and the Pathfinders Scholarship (through VECF): https://www.vecf.org/project-pathfinders/. These scholarships programs are available to non-Virginia residents.
- Recognized Degree – the certification qualifies graduates for supervisory positions in out of school time programs where the certificate is required – not just APS.
- Advanced Degrees – The credits could also lead to other advanced degrees. Please look at this chart for more information on the program or this presentation about the Early Childhood program at NVCC.
- Time Requirement – the certificate will take most employees two years to complete.
- Classes at Syphax – we are hoping to have these college classes at Syphax at least one day each week.
- Placement Tests – to take College Composition (English 111) you will be required to take two placement tests (English and Mathematics). For more information about the placement tests please look at NVCC’s Remote Placement Guidance for Students webpage. For more specific questions about placements tests please contact Christine Schull at cschull@nvcc.edu.
- ESL Tests – if English is not your first language please look at the information for International and English as a Second Language Students.
