2022 Latino Youth Leadership Conference (LYLC)
For the past 28 years, Arlington Public Schools have held a county-wide event that fosters leadership among Latino students by inspiring them and providing them positive role models. We expose students to a college campus by holding the conference in a local college or university, and we present career workshops and keynote speakers garnered from successful Latinos in a wide variety of local professions. Selected 8th – 12th grade Latino students from Arlington middle schools, high schools and alternative programs participate in the event by acting as Masters of Ceremonies, event assistants, and event-centered musical performances. The students also attend leadership workshops that expand and enhance their leadership skills with an eye to preparing them for educational experiences beyond high school. The career workshops expose students to potential opportunities and stimulate their thinking about their future entry into professions.
Students convene in the morning for the keynote address. Then they attend a workshop that develops their leadership potential. They enjoy lunch next and attend career workshops in the afternoon. The workshops are conducted from 12:30 – 1:20 and from 1:30 – 2:20.
Arlington Public Schools Office of English Learners sponsors this important and inspirational event. Students who participate express the value and positive impressions resulting from their attendance.
