ELEMENTARY, GRADE K-5
Elementary English Learner Teacher
The English Learner teacher is responsible for the instruction, assessment and monitoring of assigned English learners; communication with parents; and coordination of services with other school staff.
Qualifications: Elementary certified, with ESL endorsement; experience with teaching elementary English learners; ability to teach children in grades K-5 from diverse language, cultural, academic backgrounds; experience with integrated language arts and content instruction
One ESOL/HILT teacher at each elementary school is designated as English Learner Lead Teacher. Teachers must apply for the lead teacher position. Preferred qualifications include the following: three or more years of successful teaching experience, additional course work in content area, ability to work well with other teachers, and competence in instructional technology.
The English Learner Lead Teacher is responsible for coordinating English Learner services with the total school program, including student placement, progress, and assessment and materials; staff development and communication in the school; parent communication.

Secondary English Learner Teachers
Secondary English Learner teachers must meet the goals of the English Learner program which include the following: for students to become self-confident, bicultural, independent, life-long learners; implement curriculum at classroom level so that students acquire English proficiency, academic skills, and content knowledge; prepare daily lesson plans using curriculum content; act as a liaison between school and students and families; assess student achievement and determine students’ readiness to progress to the next level of language proficiency; participate in ongoing, sustained professional development.
Middle School English Learner Lead Teacher and High School Department Chairs:
The Middle School English Learner Lead Teacher and High School Department Chair works with school staff to coordinate placement, progress and assessment of English learners; manages and distributes materials and information to teachers in the building provides professional development and communications regarding English learners for teachers, principals and other APS staff; participates in sustained, ongoing lead teacher professional development; provides a communications link between parents, community and APS staff;
