Community Engagement Opportunities – March/April

APS is delighted that last week we welcomed back all remaining students who selected hybrid/in-person instruction. We continue to follow guidelines with a focus on the health and safety of students and staff.

Upcoming APS Community Engagement Opportunities: (Virtual unless otherwise noted)

Tu. Mar. 23         Virtual School Board Budget Work Session #4. Proposed topics are Schools Reductions, Facilities & Operations, Administrative Services, and Information Services.

Tu. Mar. 23         School Board Meeting: Public Hearing on the Superintendent’s proposed FY 2022 Budget 
8:00 p.m.            Watch School Board meetings live online or on Comcast Channel 70 or Verizon Channel 41.

Th. Mar. 25         School Board Meeting: Recognition of National Board Certified Teachers. Information on Naming the New Elementary School at the Reed Site. The Board will hear the proposed Special Education Annual Plan.

Due May 1          FREE! Camp Heat for teens 15-18 yrs. old. Arlington County Fire Department is offering a day camp June 21-25 to provide a unique insight into life as a Firefighter/EMT to encourage teens to consider the fire service as a career. Now–May 21     Writing contest for students grade 8-12 on the terrorist attack on the Pentagon known as 9/11. Hosted by the Arlington Historical Society, in partnership with Cherrydale-Columbia Lodge 42. More information here.

School Board accepting Nominations for 2021 Honored Citizens
The Arlington School Board seeks to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions on a voluntary basis to our schools. We invite you to nominate someone who has demonstrated a sustained commitment of at least five years to APS. This year has been especially challenging and many long-time volunteers have gone above and beyond their usual commitment to help our families through the pandemic and deserve to be recognized. Submit a Nomination here or contact the School Board Office at 703-228-6015. Nominations are due April 5.

– No-cost COVID-19 testing. No insurance, ID or doctor’s referral required. Arlington County operates a free, walk-in clinic M-F 12-5 p.m. at Arlington Mill Community Center (909 S. Dinwiddie St.). Aurora Hills Community Center and Tucker Field at Barcroft Park sites offer electronic results within 72 hours. Visit web or call 703-912-7999 for information.
– Arlington County offers food, financial and medical assistance resources. For food, call 703-228-1300.
Helpful resources for people suffering from substance use disorder. Community-specific hotlines for veterans, LGBTQ individuals, domestic violence, etc. are free and confidential, available 365 days a year, 24/7.
