Virginia ESL Endorsement

Requirements:

1. The applicant seeking an endorsement in English as a Second Language (ESL) shall complete a minimum of 24 hours of course work in the following:
2. Teaching of developmental reading: 3 semester hours
3. English linguistics: 3 semester hours. Experiences shall include phonology, morphology and syntax of English
4. Cross-cultural education: 3 semester hours
5. Modern foreign language: 6 semester hours If applicant’s primary language is other than English, all 6 hours must be in English.
   1. Electives: 6 semester hours
   2. Second language acquisition
   3. General linguistics
   4. Applied linguistics
   5. Psycholinguistics
   6. Sociolinguistics
   7. ESL assessment
   8. ESL curriculum development, including cross-cultural communication
6. Methods of teaching ESL: 3 semester hours
