176 Arlington Students Earn Latin Exam Medals

176 Arlington Students Earn Latin Exam Awardss Five Students Obtain Perfect Score and 53 Students Earn Gold One hundred and seventy six (176) Arlington Public Schools students earned honors for their scores on the National Latin Exam (NLE). Over 440 Arlington students took the exam with 53 students earning gold medal Summa Cum Laude, 52 students receiving a silver medal (Maxima Cum Laude), 42 earning a bronze medal (Magna Cum Laude) and 29 earning Cum Laude. Of the 176 students to take the exam, 53% or 243 met or exceeded the national average. In addition to earing Summa Cum Laude, five APS students earned a perfect score on this year’s exam. The students with perfect scores are from Swanson Middle School and include:

  • Luella Wallander – Latin I
  • Timinte Abraham – Latin II
  • Caroline Cunningham – Latin II
  • Robert Crotts – Latin II
  • Graham Lazorchak – Latin II

The National Latin Exam is given in March to students at six levels of Latin and covers grammar, reading comprehension, Roman culture, history, geography and mythology and etymology. The exam consists of 40 multiple choice questions and offers students a chance to test their knowledge against peers throughout the world. The National Latin Exam was established in 1977 to provide students with a national standard to measure their academic success. In the first year, approximately 6,000 students applied to take the exam. This year, more than 154,000 students from the US and 19 foreign countries participated in the National Latin Exam.
